Studio G hosted Greenbuild 2017 attendees at Excel Academy High School, the final stop of the High Performance Education tour on Friday November 10th. The Greenbuild tour aimed to demonstrate strategies for sustainable school design which also address the needs of urban communities.
Steve Michener and Tamar Warburg led tour guests through Excel’s new East Boston building, now a year old, which exceeds energy efficiency predictions. Steve described the strategies and components used to design the robust building envelope that exceeds both the energy stretch code and Massport noise reduction requirements. A creative approach to meeting code requirements and securing utility incentives made it possible to include a 100% addressable LED lighting system with daylight harvesting.
Excel Academy is located in East Boston, one of Boston’s neighborhoods most vulnerable to climate change. Tour guests observed the way the site design responds to projected sea level rise and offers an accessible connection to the adjacent East Boston Greenway, located in a flood zone.
